What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is an initiative of the Australian Government, administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency. It is a national system of disability support designed to enhance quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with a permanent and significant disability in Australia.

Is music therapy recognised under the NDIS?

Music therapy is recognised by the NDIA for inclusion in funded support plans under the support cluster of Therapeutic Supports. These are supports provided to assist the participant to apply their functional skills to improve participation and independence in daily, practical activities in areas such as language and communication, personal care, mobility and movement, interpersonal interactions and community living.

How do I access music therapy under the NDIS?

Music therapy is provided as an allied health service, in the same way as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and many others. If you have funding under the category of individual therapeutic support or group therapy support, you may choose to use that funding or part of that funding for music therapy.
